Shahkrisabz Suzani
S24: silk on cotton
220 x 170 cm

This magnificent suzani, most likely from Shahkrisabz , is probably from the mid 19th century or maybe a little later. Shahkrisabz produced some of the most sophisticated suzani of the period and this would be an example.
The field is a scattered garden design with multiple flowering plants including stylised carnations on trailing stems, spiralling rosettes and trailing vines. The composition is airy with the overall effect of a spring garden in full bloom – representing paradise, fertility and the renewal of life. The embroidery is remarkably fine and detailed, with subtle colour gradations creating depth in the floral forms. The sophisticated colour palette makes use of various shades of pink, magenta, and rose with muted green and touches of light blue. Influences reflect the rich variety of the Silk Road including the Persian miniature tradition, Timurid heritage (Shahkrisabz was Timur’s birthplace), Ottoman textiles and Chinese silk designs. But ultimately this a piece the piece that reflects the creativity and uniqueness of Central Asian textile design in the 19th century.
