Nurata Suzani
S2: silk on cotton
214 x 143 cm

This exquisite suzani exemplifies the refined embroidery traditions of Nurata, a small town northeast of Bukhara, that produced some of Central Asia’s most delicate needlework. The composition follows the classic Nurata design formula: four large flowering bouquets growing diagonally inward from each corner toward the centre, surrounded by scattered sprays of smaller blossoms that create an impression of abundant garden paradise.
This arrangement is known locally as “chor shokh u yak moh” (four branches and one moon), featuring the characteristic floral star at the centre and the unusually lush corner bouquets. The design reflects Nurata’s preference for airy, uncluttered compositions with delicate shades of muted indigo, rust, and cream.
The wide trellis-patterned border, typically about a quarter the width of the central field in Nurata work, contains flowers and tendrils arranged in a diagonal lattice of serrated leaves. The embroidery employs techniques typical of the Nurata region: chain stitch (yurma) for outlines and Bukhara couching (basma) as filling stitch.
