Ersari/Beshir carpet
R21: Wool
to be measured

This is a beautiful and unusual piece distinguished by its glowing deep red ground and by the large and varied gols in the field. Turkmen rugs are known for the uniformity and regularity of each gol. But here there is an inventiveness in the pattern and colour of the gols that suggests an origin in Ersari weavers or from Beshir. Some gols have dense lattice or honeycomb patterns in dark blue. Other
gols show more open radiating designs in orange/rust tones. Some display geometric star patterns at their centres. Blues dominate some gols, oranges/rusts dominate others. The surrounding field between gols also varies in density of small geometric motifs. The result seems to reflect the weaver’s confidence and artistic freedom. It creates a more dynamic, less static composition. It could be seen as a masterpiece or a showpiece carpet. The rich madder red and the blue are both from natural dyes. The piece can probably be dated to the late 19th century.
