This chapan has a bold ikat pattern with large scale floral medallions in deep pink/magenta with circular centres in yellow/gold. To give the chapan shine it would – like many ikats – have been coated in egg white and then beaten down. The pattern is very similar to the lining of the brocaded ikat (CH 4) which would have been worn by a man.
This ikat, however, would have been an outer garment worn over other layers by a woman. The large blooms likely represent poppies, tulips, or pomegranate flowers – all carrying symbolic meaning (fertility, paradise, prosperity). The yellow centres might reference the sun or divine light.
