Bukhara Adras Ikat Chapan
CH1 : Adras Silk

This is a striped silk ikat chapan featuring bold vertical bands in deep red/crimson and golden yellow/saffron. The fabric is adras, an ikat weave almost unique to Central Asia where the warp is silk and the weft is cotton giving it both lustre and durability.
As this is an ikat fabric it would have taken a long time to make and was thus expensive. It is a large piece and thus one worn by men as an overgarments with probably other chapans worn underneath.
Both the red and yellow are natural dyes – with the warp outward facing that reinforces the intensity of the colour. Though the design in bold stripes looks simple, it is a strong piece that would have been worn only by the Bukhara elite. It is probably late 19th or early 20th century.
Chapans like this represent an important part of Central Asian cultural heritage and are increasingly valued for their craftsmanship and historical significance.
