Beshir Chuval (Bag Face)

This Beshir chuval (large storage bag) is very similar in design to the large Beshir rug (R4) and was probably also woven in the second half of the 19th century. Both have the same diamond lattice structure and a colour palette with a deep burgundy/wine red ground offset by indigo blue and ivory. Beshir chuvals tend to be larger than other Turkman storage bags – probably because they were made for settled or semi-settled households. But they share with other Turkman chuvals that they were often more finely woven and viewed as prize decorative items. Both the chuval and the rug show more Persian/Central Asian urban influence than purely Turkmen tribal designs.
