Bukhara Suzani
S20: silk on cotton
247 x 150 cm

This is a classical Bukhara structure from the mid -19th century with a central field flanked by two borders. The borders are distinguished by large circular rosettes (gulkurpa or “flower bed” design) laid out symmetrically in crimson and pink, each with radiating petals and central medallions. The large rosettes are a signature Bukhara design. The central field is densely packed with smaller rosettes cupped by curving vine stems. The colour palette in crimson, pink, ivory, and indigo dark blue-black is characteristic of Bukhara in this period. This is a very finely worked piece. The density of embroidery, the consistency of stitching, the scale of ambition, and the harmonious colour relationships all suggest it was created for an important family. The design and motifs are rich in symbolism for a family embarking on the marriage of a daughter – fertility, abundance, prosperity, together with life force cosmic energy and protection.
