Tashkent Suzani
S17: silk on cotton
208 x 160 cm

The solid circular discs (moon discs or palak) in vibrant magenta/deep pink make this suzani unmistakenly from Tashkent.  A large dominant disc occupies the center of the composition serving as the visual anchor and focal point. Medium sized discs radiate outwards in a symmetrical pattern. These create a sense of movement emanating from the center like celestial bodies orbiting around a sun. Four large discs positioned in each corner create a balanced stable frame. This establishes a five-point arrangement with four corners and one center – a classic compositional device in Islamic and Central Asian art. The design draws the eye to the center and then releases it in outward waves creating a sense of expansion and cosmic order. It can be viewed as the sun with planets and stars radiating around it. The structure also mirrors the dome and vault patterns found in Islamic architecture with the central medallion recalling the view upwards to the dome’s interior. The piece was probably made towards the end of the 19th century or early 20th.
