Kyrgyzstan Rug
R7: Wool
384 x 150 cm

This bold rug with its thick pile and glowing madder red is from Kyrgyzstan, the mountainous country in Central Asia, that borders Uzbekistan.  The field is arranged in all-over diagonal lattice of diamond shaped medallions in alternating row. The large medallions with rams’s horn scrolls emanating from each corner are the characterist Kyrgyz cloudband motifs rendered in navy blue, ivory and golden tan.  Secondary diamond medallions with geometric checkerboard offset the larger medallions. The running scroll border is one the main identifiers of Kyrgyz weaving
The Kyrgyz people were pastoral nomads who mainly produced woollen felts. Rugs are relatively rare.  In contrast to Turkmen pieces which are organised around the gol in a symmetrical, precisely repeated pattern, the Kyrgyz rugs use a freer, more organic layout with more variation between individual medallions.
Dating from the late 19th century, all the dyes are natural.
